Description

Although radiation offers many benefits, exposure to it can also threaten our health and the quality of our environment. We cannot eliminate radiation, but this training shows how we can reduce our risk by controlling our exposure to it. Ideal learners include workers whose job duties require them to work or spend time in any portion of an area where harmful radiation may be present.

Objectives

  • Define ionizing radiation and its properties.
  • Recall how we measure ionizing radiation.
  • Identify types and sources of ionizing radiation.
  • Recognize the health effects of overexposure to ionizing radiation.
  • Recall the purpose and protective measures of the "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA) principle.
  • Recall ways to control exposure to ionizing radiation, including shielding, administrative and work practices, monitoring, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Remember what to do during and after emergencies involving ionizing radiation.
